piquing my pinterest / console tables

by ~Tina on January 15, 2012

I have this friend. And she has this table behind one of her lounges.

She probably doesn’t realise that I have this obsession with her table behind the lounge but since the very first time I had seen it, I obsessed with how I  was going to make that work in my living room.

SO much so obsessed that I DID consider going to her house just to take a photo of it for this blog post. Hehe. She wouldn’t think anything of it. She already knows I’m a little weird.

You see, my living room is tiny small cozy and I can only rearrange the furniture so many ways and if I stuck a table in behind one of the lounges, I’m bringing the lounge closer to the centre of the room which might close things  in and make the room look even more *ahem* cosier.

But that still doesn’t defer from the fact that I really really want NEED a console table behind my lounge.

And then I got thinking about what I would put on that console table, if I got one.

So I hit Pinterest…

THIS is what I imagine a console table is meant to look like. Pretty things on top with room underneath for…stuff. Unfortunately in my case, I don’t have the room to have the lounges in the middle of the room.

I love the simplicity of this – two ceramic pieces. And nothing else.

Two lamps work for me too. Which means that we wouldn’t have to have the “big” light on all the time, creating a mood.

This one too. Just a lamp and a small ornament – or is that a candle?

Three glass vases. I DO like this but with the table behind the lounge I would be concerned about the kids plonking themselves on the lounge and bumping the table and having to sweep up a whole heap of glass shards.

With a little help from Bill and the kids, we moved things around so I could add my console table. There may or may not have been some eye-rolling from those helping me when I said that we HAD to fit this in.

Want to see what it looks like?

You see that leaf shaped thing? It’s meant to be a wall hanging. When I saw it in the store, it was laying on it’s side like this. Bill (the husband – for those playing at home) said something along the lines of  ”It’s meant to be hanging on the wall. You can’t use it as a bowl”.

Ah, yes I can.

Thank you. As soon as I saw it,I thought it WAS a bowl.Of course, if we ever change our decor I can repurpose it and use it as a hanger ;)

I adore that first pic and LOVE the one with the ottomans underneath – I'd get hollow ones and use it for storgae space :) We currently have a console table and use the top for photos in nice frames + a vase, and underneath is where we keep our wine rack – very handy!

Wine rack! I forgot to get a wine rack! And good idea to use hollow ottomans. I have a another space in the lounge room where I want to add one more side table and an ottoman would fit nicely underneath. Will keep that in mind.

My fave is the first one. I love yours too and ESPECIALLY because you used a wall hanging – tell Bill that is the sign of a creative decorator. I never think outside the box like that (but wish i did)

I'm learning to think outside the box. That first one is so pretty, isn't it? :)

I want a table behind my couch now! I have a huge lounge room with not much in it and no idea how to fill it to make it look more cozy…. Might have to scour eBay for something cheap I can tart up.

tinagraydotme January 16, 2012 at 10:34 pm

eBay is awesome for cheap pieces to tart up! I got my corner display cabinet on ebay for $20! Still considering whether I should paint it or leave it. It has a few scratches but it adds to it's character.

omg no way! My husband and I were talking about exactly this last night! We were discussing how we wanted to put a slimline table behind our lounge in the theatre room of the new house, and then you post about it! Amazing!!

Great minds, hey? :)

@MahliMoo January 15, 2012 at 12:14 pm

I have wanted a console table behind the lounge too, I have the room for it, but am just worried about the kids destroying whatever I put on it. I am saving that dream for when they are older.

tinagraydotme January 16, 2012 at 10:35 pm

Did you see my FB status the day this post went live? One of my kids threw a cushion and broke one of my lamps :(

melissa4444 January 15, 2012 at 1:47 pm

It's FAR better as a bowl! I love all of these Pins.

Thanks Trish. I like it :)

I actually LOVE your end result! Now if I had done that, Master 6 would already be playing with the ornaments that are in the basket! My console table is near our front entry, a simple dark wood one.

Funnily enough none of the kids have played with them although the 19 year old did come home, grab one and say WTF?! He has no appreciation for prettiness.

Sonia @ LLH January 15, 2012 at 9:30 pm

I love the idea of a console table too and yours looks fabulous. But I too am petrified that the way the kids jump around on those couches, we will have broken bits including bits of the kids. Another one to add to the list of things I will have when the kids are a bit older :) xx Thanks for hosting us this week – Sunday is one of my fave days of blogging because i just love a good excuse to spend legitimate time on Pinterest ;) xx

Ha! I was thinking the same when I was on Pinterest the other day and the hubs asked me if I was wasting time on Pinterest. I told him I was researching ;)

LisaW January 16, 2012 at 9:24 am

I have wanted a console table behind my lounge for the longest time! My lounge sits in front of a window and I hate when it pushes back onto the wall. I think a console table would do the trick, and I could put a nice lamp or something on it. TFS Tina.

tinagraydotme January 16, 2012 at 10:39 pm

This lounge sits up against the windows too and I hated it. With the console table there now, my curtains sit nicely.

@mumofadultkids January 16, 2012 at 11:51 am

I'm not on Pinterest… yet. I'm tempted to jump in there, I love the idea of being able to access so many wonderful images and ideas. Maybe one day.
Re: the wall hanging/bowl… I don't think there is any rule against using something for another purpose other than the one intended – safely of course! The wall hanging makes a great bowl, and now not only looks good but is useful too!

tinagraydotme January 16, 2012 at 10:41 pm

I love Pinterest! It's given me so many ideas when thinking about making over my home AND for inspirational poster art :) I like that when I get tired of using it as a bowl I can hang it on the wall because it will still match our decor :)

Mummyissuesp2 January 16, 2012 at 11:10 pm

We are planning a big extension reno in the next couple of years and until then I have to hold off on any major furniture purchases… I love console tables and the loveliness of things on them and in them. I particularly love the first and fourth ones. Thanks for hosting! x
