In this post, Marissa shares her Top 10 tips to organise your car…

How much time do you spend in your car?

Driving to and from work, the school run, family trips, shopping and other errands all add up to a lot of time in such a small space. It’s no wonder our cars can get crowded and cluttered!

You can make the most of the time you spend in your car by using the inside storage areas wisely. With a bit of clever organising and a simple maintenance routine you can create a mobile space that’s both convenient and comfortable.

Here are my 10 Tips to organise your car:

1.  Throw out any rubbish

2.  Take everything else out of your car and lay it on a table or floor space so it’s easy to see and decide what belongs in the car and what should be put away elsewhere

3.  Grab a pen and paper and jot down all the things you would keep at your fingertips in your ‘dream’ car and group the like ones together. Need ideas? You can use my list

4.  Go back to your car with your pen and paper and list all the storage areas you see in your car – even the little ones – you might be amazed at how much storage space there is!

5.  Assign each of your ‘dream’ car items to a storage area

6.  If you’ve been waiting to do it, now is the time to look for cool car storage products! My favourites are trunk organisers, cd visors, and back of seat organisers. These are very handy but optional as your car has plenty of storage compartments anyway. Or use something you already have – I label all of our car chargers and keep them in a pencil case

7.  Gather up your ‘dream car’ items and neatly put them all in their assigned spaces

8.  Pop a post it or cute label card into each space so it’s easy to see what belongs there (makes for quick tidying later – here’s a free label you can use):

9.  Show your family each storage space and label card so they are familiar with each item’s home, and – this is the big one – explain that after every car trip they’ll be helping you tidy up the car

10. Schedule the boring but necessary stuff like wash & vacuum the car and fill up with petrol weekly or fortnightly – so you’ll never run out of petrol or have a really dirty car again

All Done! Your car is now perfectly equipped, organised and a pleasure to drive :)

I’m usually tidy with my car. I don’t tend to leave things in it that don’t belong, and I have a plastic crate in my boot that looks after cloth shopping bags, a picnic rug and a sun hat – things I always might need!

I don’t think I could do label cards, no matter how cute they are… and washing my car seems a waste of time at the moment, with all the rain we are getting. Before the ‘great rains’ it was getting washed every fortnight!

I’d be lost without my label cards, without them the whole family would just throw everything in at random and it would take ages to find anything – plus they make it easier for me to get the husband and daughter to help tidy the car up :)

Having that plastic crate in your boot is such a good idea, especially for shopping bags!

Errr, you do NOT want to see inside my car at the moment :S (or outside for that matter! It’s really dusty for some reason) But, given that we have to sell it soon, that’ll get sorted out soon enough!

Julia-Kuku Couture Invitations February 28, 2012 at 3:30 pm

I need all the help I can get, I am super tidy in the house but my home has 18 steps out the front of it. Which mean I have to carry baby, shopping, handbag + my 34week pregnant self up the stairs so I often leave things in the car and they pile up to the point where I can no longer drive passengers.

Thanks for the tips

Yep, I give you full permission to delegate emptying the car to everyone else Julia :)

My friend had the same situation at her house (well, lots of steps) and ended up grocery shopping online instead – so someone else has to manage the steps! She said she felt a bit guilty though and was always asking if they wanted a hand anyway ;)

My car is just full of the kids stuff I tell you. It is so annoying. I don’t normally do the cleaning though. The hubs does that, which is one thing less to do for me! :)

Oh you have a good husband Norlin :) My 2yr old LOVES washing the car but I hate it, so I always ask her to ask her Dad if they can do it together :) He loves it too though, now they do his motorbike too!
